Keynote Address by
Warren Macdonald
Warren Macdonald’s life’s boundaries were redefined in April 1997 with his accident on North Queensland’s (Australia) Hinchinbrook Island. Climbing to the Island’s tallest peak, he became trapped beneath a one-ton slab boulder in a freak rock fall. Two days later he was rescued, only to undergo the amputation of both legs at mid thigh. Just ten months later, he climbed Tasmania’s Cradle Mountain using a modified wheelchair and the seat of his pants.
In February 2003, he became the first double above-knee amputee to reach the summit of Africa’s tallest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro (19,222 feet), and more recently, in a spectacular effort requiring more than 2,800 pull-ups over four days, created history once again in an ascent of America's tallest cliff face, El Capitan. He is also the only above knee amputee to make an ascent of Canada’s landmark frozen waterfall, the 600 foot “Weeping Wall” in Alberta.
Warren’s first book, A Test of Will is an Australian bestseller and the subject of the Trapped under a Boulder episode of the Discovery Channel series I Shouldn’t Be Alive. His film documenting the epic four-week journey to Federation Peak, Australia's most challenging mountain summit, The Second Step, has been acclaimed worldwide, screening on National Geographic Television and winning eight international awards including Grand Prize at the prestigious Banff Mountain Film Festival.
Warren has appeared on numerous news and current affairs programs, including Larry King Live, The Oprah Winfrey Show, and The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos. He has written articles for CNN World Edition (WWW), Australian Geographic, Speaking of Impact and Professional Speaker.
He lives in Winlaw, British Columbia with his partner Margo Talbot.

GO BEYOND THE CLASSROOMS!
Not all education comes from the classroom…
PDS XXIV is the biggest and best opportunity you have to meet and network with your counterparts in other Military Services and the private sector. Networking is never dull when you participate in our Senior Enlisted Leadership Panel on Wednesday, 1 February 2012. Make plans to join us for lunch both days in our 200+ booth Trade Expo, too.
THE PATH TO EXCELLENCE: Efficiency and Effectiveness through Education
The theme for PDS XXIV San Diego is “The Path to Excellence: Efficiency and Effectiveness through Education.” The field of Military Housing is an evolutionary one. PDS is a rare opportunity for Military Housing Professionals, in all branches of the Military Service, including private sector employees, to gain insight and fresh perspectives by learning next to their counterparts. We believe this revolutionary educational event will help build the path to excellence.
At PDS XXIV, PHMA and MHLI will be helping Military Housing Professionals navigate the path to excellence through our training courses and general sessions. We will cover a multitude of topics that are foremost in the minds of everyone involved in Military Housing and Lodging.
We strive to help Military Housing Professionals contribute towards better quality housing and service for our Service Members and their Families. We work towards raising the proficiency and professionalism of service with the Military Services’ Housing Professional through improved communications and networking, education and training and professional recognition.
GENERAL SESSION
Senior Enlisted Leadership Panel
This is a great opportunity to be able to listen to and interact with the Senior Enlisted Leadership from each of the military departments, including Coast Guard. These unique individuals not only represent their Services’ enlisted personnel to their respective Service Chief, but they also testify annually to Congress as well as serving on many boards and in many forums to enhance the overall military career of all enlisted personnel. Each speaker is provided time to discuss specific
“hot housing topics” within their Service and then a moderated panel allows a significant block of time for Q&A’s on housing related issues.
