Digital Guidelines for
Defense Communities

Defense Communities is happy to accept your digital images provided they are optimal quality for printing. Use the following guidelines to ensure a quality end result.

HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR DIGITAL IMAGES

Photo Resolution: Print process requires high resolution photography. Resolution must be 266 to 300 dpi (dots per inch). To achieve this, the digital camera must be set on high resolution at the time the photo is taken AND at the time the image is transferred to the computer. It is possible to take a large (for example, 9" X 12") image at 150 dpi and reduce it down to 3" X 4" at 300 dpi. The reverse is not true, however; photos cannot size up without loss of data (image quality will be compromised significantly). Cover photos need to be 8 x 10 at 300 dpi and for articles they need to be 5" X 7" at 300 dpi.

HOT TIP!
Always use the highest Megapixel Setting possible for your digital camera for best results. Maximum Quality and Fine Quality are preferred over the Standard Quality which is used for sharing e-mail.

Saved Formats: Images should be saved as JPEG, TIFF, or PCX – with ".JPG" or ".TIF" formats preferred. Also important – when saving as JPEG, choose MAXIMUM quality. Do not submit PowerPoint images.

Photo Identification: Please name digital photos in a simple and logical system. For example, if the article is by Birgitt Seymour, you could name the photos birgitt1.jpg, birgitt2.jpg, etc.

Charts and Graphs: PDF files are preferred for charts and graphs. EPS or Adobe Illustrator files work too. Do not submit TIF or JPG format.

Image Editing: Artifacts or defects in images will need to be corrected. Please don’t adjust the photos; our graphic designer will take care of any color and other adjustments that need to be made. If you feel you must make adjustments, then please send along the original image as well as the adjusted image.

Transmission: Preferred – CD-ROM. If sending by e-mail, files cannot be larger than 2MB. If larger than 2 MB, send a CD by mail. Please note regarding electronic transmission: Because of occasional file corruptions that can occur during electronic transmissions, no more than one uncompressed photo per e-mail should be sent at a time.
